A polyethylene catheter inadvertently sheared off during a diagnostic
thoracentesis was successfully extracted with a flexible endoscope.
Coincidentally, excellent visualization of the entire pleural space was
noted. The procedure was performed with the patient under general
anesthesia and sterile technique was employed. The patient sustained no
untoward consequence. Coelomic analysis with a flexible endoscope may be
appropriate in other diagnostic and therapeutic circumstances.
