Three cases of delayed infection of automatic implantable cardioverter-
defibrillator devices without systemic manifestations are reported.
Computed tomographic scan of the heart revealed fluid deep to the patch in
each case. Sonication of explanted automatic implantable
cardioverter-defibrillator patches facilitated the recovery of adherent
microorganisms in one case. Management of this previously unrecognized
problem is outlined.
